Smashed Avocado: the fuel a generation needs to get into the property market.

Five under $500,000 - July 3, 2018

We've travelled far and wide and found five properties that are not only going for less than $500,000, most are under $300,000. You'll have to journey well beyond your backyard to check out most of these beauties, but if you're up for a lifestyle change or looking for a regional investment, whack a road trip playlist on and hit up some far-flung open homes. If you must stay in the city, we've found the prettiest concrete shell in ol' Melbourne.

9 Jones Street, Strahan, Tasmania

Mate. If this isn't a top spot to throw some snags on the barbie, we don't know where is. It's near precisely nothing, but this home on Tassie's west coast, with one acre or rainforest land, makes for an enviable escape. It has three bedrooms, one bathroom a four-birth carport and workshop. At $290,000 it's a solid investment, whether you move in or pretty it up for the holiday market.

10 George Street Webb Beach, South Australia

Um, so this is basically a giant timber tent, but look at that potential. It's a 40-year-old A-frame home just metres from the beach. There are two bedrooms, large open-plan living area, mezzanine with balcony and a garage with workshop. It's 62-kilometres out of town – an easy weekend getaway or a do-able commute if you're up for a solid daily drive. At $170,000 to $180,000 (plus a reno) it could be a very good buy. You'll see dividends paid by hipster Airbnb-ers in no time.

19/148 Arthurton Road, Northcote, Melbourne

Can't afford a house? Join the queue. But maybe you can afford this artsy shed, priced at $410,000 to $450,000. It's in an industrial zone, but the agents reckon it has the potential to be a cosy inner-city pad, so read the contract carefully. It has a mezzanine, bathroom and shower. If you do your due diligence with the council you could be the proud owner of a pricy concrete box.

4/73-75 Toogood Road Woree, Queensland

You can get this little ripper and all the sun in the world for a cool $200,000. The two-bed, one-bath retreat is just out of Cairns. It's renovated and comes with a polished living and dining space, new kitchen plus a split-system to keep you chillin' on those scorchers. That courtyard, though. Imagine how many frothies you'll happily sink there.

13 Powell Terrace, Kadina , South Australia

Just a friendly reminder that if you're prepared to invest in a super remote piece of this great southern land then you can get a magnificent Victorian cottage for an absolute steal. This residence might be a hike from Adelaide, but it's a three-bedder with a pretty living room, new floorboards and charming bullnose verandah, all for the price of $259,000.
